Heavy Atom Subgroup
ranajit.mondol@austin.utexas.edu
My research in the Rose group revolves around synthetic methods development to obtain heavy-main group element containing bidentate- and multidentate-ligands and their late first row transition metal complexes. These newly synthesized coordination complexes are characterized by X-ray crystallography, EPR, SQUID magnetometry techniques and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations with an overall goal to investigate the “heavy-atom effect” on the magnetic properties of the light transition metals in these complexes.

I work towards modeling the active site of nitrogenase, the iron-molybdenum cofactor through iron-carbide-carbonyl cluster syntheses. In specific, I am looking at the synthesis of iron-molybdenum clusters accessible through novel routes and examining carbonyl substitution for phosphine- and sulfur-containing ligands on these clusters.
In my free time I like to make topographical maps of urban areas! I’m currently working on Venice Beach, CA.

claire.hallock@utexas.edu
Lakeland, FL
My research is focused on experimental methods to quantify the density of states at organically modified semiconductor interfaces. This research helps us understand the fundamental electronic structure changes that can occur and how we can use these properties to design better photocathodes for hydrogen generation!
Outside the lab you can find me– competing in local tennis leagues, at Zilker with friends playing ultimate frisbee, or trying to learn how to ice skate! I also run a Chemistry-themed t-shirt printing business out of my apartment as a side hustle.

Hello my name is Gabriella. I am officially recognized as a member of the Solar Fuels subgroup, but in reality, I am a rogue graduate student. I spend most of my days on my computer, processing Grazing Incidence Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS) data and Microcrystal Electron Diffraction (MicroED) data. Both GIWAXS and MicroED are incredibly helpful for studying systems/samples that cannot be investigated using traditional imaging or diffraction methods; such as: organic semiconductor thin films, surface covalent organic frameworks, and very small crystallites. In my free time, I’m training for the 202X Iron Man Championships in Kailua-Kona!

As with the rest of the Solar fuels subgroup, I am obsessed with silicon and anthracene. My project is to synthesize an anthracene-based ligand scaffold for surface attachment to Si(111), enabling conjugated coordination of a metal ion to bulk silicon. Using this surface, we hope to gain insights into hybridization at Si|molecule interfaces. I am also pursuing these insights through DFT.
Outside lab, you can primarily find me at Austin Bouldering Project, trying to get better at pulling on plastic. I also have more than 100 Rubik’s cubes!

My project investigates the differences in reactivity that occur at a transition metal center when appended to either a rigid or flexible chelating ligand. Specifically, I utilize a tricyclic ligand scaffold approach where the flexibility of each ligand is tuned by substituting in chalcogenide atoms at the central positions of the scaffold. I like to characterize things using various NMR techniques and sometimes by shooting X-rays at crystals. Outside of the lab I enjoy spending time with *Borat voice* my wife and dog. I have once eaten a stack of pancakes as tall as myself.

My research focuses on designing a model system to study the effect of a macromolecular host on the dynamics of a small molecule. By developing an analytical tool to measure the dynamics of molecules inside the host, we can compare the effect of host molecules with different dynamics (e.g. a rigid macrocycle versus a flexible protein) on our target molecules. I am also working to synthesize a more stable ruthenium analog of the FeGP cofactor mimics reported by our lab. Outside of lab I like to read, do yoga, and use my kitchen scale way more often than necessary.

My research focuses on improving molecular functionalization of silicon wafers for photoelectrochemistry. My goal is to increase attachment and performance of these wafers as photocathodes, using novel organic molecules to probe trends and outcomes in expanding the attachment strategies and methods to probe -and remediate- some of the limitations of our systems. One of my points of pride is I narrated Les Fleurs du Mal by Charles Baudelaire, a poetry production of Audible.com (not sponsored).
